  32. INTRODUCTION

  35. The WW1000 disk included with this Application Note contains
  36. VSHARE.386 version 3.11.0.402. This version of VSHARE.386 is
  37. compatible with Microsoft Windows version 3.1 and Windows for
  38. Workgroups versions 3.1 and 3.11.
  39.  
  40.   NOTE: Microsoft Office versions 4.2 and 4.3 install version
  41.   3.11.0.401 of VSHARE.386.
  42.  
  43. The version of VSHARE.386 included with this Application Note differs
  44. from the version included with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (version
  45. 3.11.0.300) in the following ways:
  46.  
  47.  - The version of VSHARE.386 included with this Application Note
  48.    supports Windows version 3.1.
  49.  
  50.  - The version of VSHARE.386 included with this Application Note
  51.    corrects a problem than can cause Windows for Workgroups 3.11 to
  52.    stop responding (hang) when you start your computer.

  54. USING VSHARE.386
  55. ----------------
  56.  
  57. If you are using applications that support OLE 2.0, you must run
  58. either SHARE.EXE or VSHARE.386. VSHARE.386 eliminates the need to run
  59. SHARE.EXE when you run Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups in 386
  60. enhanced mode. If you run Windows 3.1 in standard mode, you must run
  61. SHARE.EXE. If you run applications that are not compatible with
  62. SHARE.EXE and you are running Windows 3.1 in 386 enhanced mode, the
  63. applications may work with VSHARE.386 instead of SHARE.EXE.

  65. INSTALLING THE UPDATED VSHARE.386 FILE
  66. --------------------------------------

  68. To install VSHARE.386 version 3.11.0.402, follow these steps:
  69.  
  70. 1. Quit Windows.
  71.  
  72. 2. If you received a disk with this Application Note, insert the disk
  73.    in the appropriate floppy disk drive.
  74.  
  75.    If you downloaded this Application Note from an online service,
  76.    skip to step 3. This procedure assumes that you have already
  77.    downloaded and extracted the compressed file.
  78.  
  79. 3. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following command and
  80.    then press ENTER
  81.  
  82.       copy <source>:\vshare.386 <location>
  83.    
  84.    where <source> is either the letter of your floppy disk drive or
  85.    the directory containing the file you downloaded from online
  86.    services, and <location> is the path to your Windows\SYSTEM
  87.    subdirectory. For example, if you are installing from a floppy disk
  88.    that you inserted in drive A, and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM is the path to
  89.    your Windows\SYSTEM subdirectory, type:

  91.       copy a:\vshare.386 c:\windows\system
  92.    
  93.    Or, for example, if you downloaded the WW1000.EXE file from online
  94.    services to C:\DOWNLOAD and C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM is the path to your
  95.    Windows\SYSTEM subdirectory, type:
  96.  
  97.       copy c:\download\vshare.386 c:\windows\system
  98.  
  99. 4. Use any text editor (such as MS-DOS Editor) to edit the
  100.    AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Remove the SHARE.EXE command from the
  101.    AUTOEXEC.BAT file and then save and close the file.
  102.  
  103. 5. Edit the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI file to add the
  104.    following line:
  105.  
  106.       device=vshare.386
  107.  
  108. 6. Save and then close the SYSTEM.INI file.
  109.  
  110. 7. Restart your computer.
